Story

"The story of Yowamushi Pedal is as followed. Sakamichi Onoda is an anime otaku who hopes to join the anime club at his new school, however he is saddened to find out that the club has been shut down due to lack of members. In order to cheer himself up, he decides to travel to Akihabara on his small city bicycle which is 90 kilometers away. On his embark down the steep hill that leads to the back of his school, he meets Shunsuke Imaizumi who is impressed by Onoda and his ability to climb the hill on his small bicycle. Thus he challenges him to a race and Onoda is thrown into the world of high-school cycling. Now from the synopsis of this show may come off a bit campy and silly, but really it lacks the real understand of what this show is and that in my opinion is the story of an underdog. The first 6 episodes of this series are mostly dedicated to introducing the first years that join the Sohoku team and their introduction into the team which can be considered a slow burn but the tension really builds in the sixth episode." (Reference: http://yowamushipedal.wikia.com/)

Imaizumi is an all-rounder and he uses his sharp, logical thinking to strategize in races, though he becomes quite hot-blooded when driven into a corner. The characters are the strongest part of the anime so far. Each of the first years introduced are pretty likable and interesting. They are all quite different from each other with personalities that either clash or go well together. We are also briefly introduced to the third years as well but as of so far, the first set of episodes are mainly focused on the main protagonist Onoda and his introduction into cycling races. I also say that Onoda is quite the enjoyable character, his determination is very motivating and I can see myself rooting for him as the show goes on.

This anime also includes some hilarious gags as well. One thing that I didn’t notice for a while was that there is often a short at the end of each episode. The shorts are often the characters doing something quite silly and I found that pretty amusing at some points. Also a running gag in the show is a song that Onoda sings constantly throughout the show that comes from his favorite anime "Love Hime". It’s a silly and surprisingly catchy song that I found stupidly silly at first but as I heard it more, it grew on me and now I find myself singing it from time to time.
